Cutting Costs

As soon as Jane walked in the door, she knew something was wrong. Her mom was home too early. She was normally still at work when Jane got home from school. "Mom, why are you home?" Jane asked.


"Well, honey," her mom said hesitantly, "I got laid off today. Right now my employer is not making enough money to pay all of his employees. He had to let some of us go. Unfortunately, I was one of them." Jane was not sure she understood what was happening, but the look on her mom's face told her that being laid off was not a good thing.


"So what does this mean?" Jane asked.
