Diligent Housekeepers

My mother works as a housekeeper. She actually has two jobs. She works as a housekeeper for the president of a local company, and she also works hard at our house!

I admire my mother. When I was only five, my father passed away unexpectedly. My sister was two at the time, and my mother was left with a young boy and little girl to raise. We did not have a lot of money, so she began to look for a job outside the home.

She started out by cleaning houses for people who lived in another neighborhood and could afford housekeepers. She worked very hard, putting great effort into her tasks. When Mom dusted a room, she didn't just sweep a feather duster across the furniture. She carefully wiped down all the pictures and knick knacks with a cloth. In the kitchen, she wiped the entire surface of cabinets, getting rid of any spots and fingerprints. Because she sometimes took us with her, I was able to see for myself how hard she worked.

Soon, Mom was recommended to others because her customers were so pleased with her work. Eventually, Mr. Peters (my mom's current boss) offered her a job as a full-time housekeeper. He offered to pay her more than all the other jobs combined, so now Mom goes to work for his family eight hours per day. She cleans and cooks for them, and they love her.

Sometimes I feel bad that Mom comes home to more work -- another house that needs cleaned and kids that need fed. So, I try to help her in the best way I can. I've tried to copy her style of cleaning. The other day, I cleaned the whole kitchen until it looked brand new again. I call it "deep cleaning." I remember how Mom appreciated it.
