Don't Judge a Grain by Its Color

Grains might be an important part of your diet. Grains contain iron, dietary fiber, and B vitamins. But not all grains are equal. Some foods in the grain group are whole grains. They are made using the entire grain kernel. Brown rice and whole wheat bread contain whole grains. The USDA's MyPlate recommends that at least one half of your daily grains be whole grains. Other grains are refined. Refined grains have been milled. Milling removes the bran and germ from the kernel. It also removes the dietary fiber, many of the B vitamins, and the iron. Refined grains have a finer texture. They also have a longer shelf life. White bread, white rice, and white flour are refined grains.
