Dorothy Hamill

Dorothy Hamill

Reading Comprehension for July 26

Have you ever felt like you were left out of everything? Maybe you're not good in school. Perhaps you are shy and find it hard to make friends. If so, you might be like the famous figure skater Dorothy Hamill.

She was born on July 26, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, but she grew up in Greenwich, Connecticut. As a child, she was shy around strangers. Her older brother was very smart, and her older sister had many friends. Dorothy had neither of those gifts. She ended up feeling stupid most of the time and that she didn't fit in.

One day while skating on a frozen pond, her sister refused to teach her how to skate backwards and went off with a friend. To make Dorothy feel better, her mother offered to get her into group skating lessons. Dorothy learned how to skate backwards, but she also learned something else - she loved to skate! When she was on the ice, it didn't matter if she was shy. It didn't matter if she wasn't a good student. She said, "I could be all alone, and nobody could get near me, and I didn't have to talk to anybody. I was in my fantasy world."
