Empty Calories on My Plate

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a new way to help people make good choices about what they eat. It is a diagram called My Plate that is a visual representation of healthy food portions. You do not want food on your plate that contains a lot of "empty calories."

Calories supply your body with energy. Empty calories come from added sugars and/or solid fats. They have little or no nutrients. A few empty calories are acceptable. Good food choices can reduce the amount of empty calories people eat. Let's be food detectives and find where they are hiding!
