Feel Full on Fewer Calories

Tara's doctor wanted her to lose some weight. She had tried different diets in the past but had not been successful. She always felt hungry and gave up. This time she was going with her mom to a nutritionist for some advice.

Ms. Peters welcomed Tara and her mom to her office. "What can I do for you today?" Ms. Peters asked.

"I need to lose some weight for health reasons," Tara chimed in, "but I haven't been successful the other times I have tried."

"What happened the other times?" Ms. Peters questioned.

"Well," Mom started, "one time she tried a really low calorie fad diet and ended up getting sick."

"Another time," Tara spoke up, "I gave up a few weeks into the diet because I was so hungry all the time."

"In my professional opinion," Ms. Peters stated, "these strategies were wrong for you. First and foremost, fad diets don't work long-term. Only tried and true healthy eating and exercise do. Second of all, if you were hungry all the time, you weren't eating the right foods to satisfy you. If you are hungry all the time, you'll give up."

Ms. Peters continued, "Let's give up on extreme restrictions, extreme hunger, and fads. No gimmicks, please. Now I want to teach you about less energy dense foods."

"What kind of energy do foods have?" Tara asked.
