Fungi (FUN-jhy or FUN-guy) are all around us. There are about one hundred thousand kinds known to mankind. We eat mushrooms and use yeast to make bread rise. Some fungi are used to make medicines that kill bacteria. In soil, fungi are natural decomposers. They break down dead plants and animals. Fungi help recycle nutrients and add them back to the soil.
