Gerald McDermott

Many authors write books. Then those books are illustrated. Finally some of those books are turned into movies. Gerald McDermott did it the other way. First he made movies about folktales. Then he turned his movies into books. He was a filmmaker. But he was an author and illustrator too. He always loved art, myths, and folktales. His books, illustrations, and films merge the best of all these worlds.


Mr. McDermott was born on January 31, 1941. When he was four, he began taking art classes at a local museum in Michigan. He studied art in high school, too. His school was for gifted children. It had special art classes. After high school he went to college. He earned a scholarship. He went to the Pratt Institute in New York. After college, he began making films.
