Gordon's Friends

Elephant Day

Reading Comprehension for September 22

Gordon stood next to his mother. The wide grasslands went further than he could see. Mom said it was a nice place. Gordon saw a problem. There were no other young elephants like him.

"But Mom," said Gordon, "Who will I play with?"

"There are many other animals around," said Mom. "Make friends with them."

Gordon kept his eyes open. Then he saw some young antelopes. They were jumping up and down on their toes.

"May I play too?" asked Gordon hopefully.

The young antelopes stopped jumping. They all stared at him.

"Your legs are too thick for jumping," said one.

"You cannot keep up," said another.

They all laughed and jumped away through the grass. Gordon was sad. It might be hard to make new friends.
