Happy Presidents' Day

Each third Monday in February, America celebrates Presidents' Day. This day honors our first president, George Washington. We also remember our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. Both of their birthdays were in February. George Washington's birthday was February 22, and Abraham Lincoln's was February 12. The holiday is officially named "Washington's Birthday," but some people call it Presidents' Day to also honor Lincoln. Many Americans simply enjoy an extra day off work. That is because government offices, post offices, schools, and some businesses close for the holiday.

Around this holiday, you may study George Washington or Abraham Lincoln with your teacher. You may also study about other presidents as well. We have had more than 40 presidents of the United States. If you choose to study others, there are many to choose from! You may select John F. Kennedy or Franklin D. Roosevelt. You may learn about Bill Clinton, our 42nd president, or Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States.
