Hiram was born in 1806. He was born in a small town in Massachusetts. He was the first born. His family later grew to include four brothers and six sisters. Hiram's parents were very poor. They worked very hard all of their lives. But they could never quite get enough money to live comfortably.


Hiram and his family moved to a town called Ludlow. His father had gotten a job running a grist-mill there. Wheat and corn were brought to grist-mills so that they could be ground into flour or meal. Hiram was put to work at the mill before he was three years old. It was his job to collect tolls on the bridge outside the mill. People who wanted to cross the bridge had to pay two cents. Hiram could count to two. He knew what a penny looked like. He was given the job of collecting the money.
