Honoring the Dogs

"Uncle Bart," called Jose, "where are you?"

"I am here in the workroom," yelled Uncle Bart. "Come and see what I am working on."

Jose clomped down the stairs into the basement. The front of the house opened onto a hilltop. The basement opened onto the backyard. It had big glass doors that let in lots of light.

Uncle Bart was working at a scroll saw. It could cut shapes from wood. Uncle Bart was cutting a shape.

Jose knew not to get close. A moment later, Uncle Bart held up the wood he was cutting. "What does this shape look like, Jose?" he asked.

"It looks like a dog," said Jose.

Uncle Bart nodded. "Do you know what kind of dog?"

Jose cocked his head and thought. "It looks like a German shepherd dog," he said.

Uncle Bart nodded. "That is correct. I have more over here. What do they look like?"

Jose looked at the cut-out shapes. He stood them up in a row.

"This one looks like a Doberman," he said. "Is this a Labrador?"

Uncle Bart shook his head. "This one is a golden retriever. It has long hair. This one is a Lab. They are short-haired."

"What are the other dog shapes?" asked Jose.

"Let's see," said Uncle Bart. "This one is a border collie." He touched each shape. "This is a beagle, a Rottweiler, or Rottie, and a pit bull."
