Hot and Cold Food on My Plate

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has a new diagram called My Plate to help people make good choices about healthy food portions. The USDA has some other good advice about keeping food safe and healthy to eat. This advice can be summarized in a simple rule: keep foods at the right temperature.

Foods need to be cooked to a temperature that is high enough to kill any harmful bacteria that could cause illness. A food thermometer can measure the internal temperature of egg dishes, poultry, and cooked meat. For example, fish has to be cooked to 145 degrees.
