I Can Be Short or Long!

I am a homonym that can be spelled two ways, and I have at least two meanings. In one case, I am associated with an end; in the other, I have both a beginning and an end. First of all, I am found on animals of all kinds. I can be short or long, smooth or textured. On a bunny, I look like a fluffy cotton ball. Dogs wag me when they are happy or excited. I can be fluffy on some dogs and smooth on others. I can even be cute and stubby! On a mouse, I look like a slender string. On the other hand, I can also be read in a book or told by one person to another. I can be entertaining, informative, sad, or funny depending on the goal .....
