Jamie's Dream

The greatest house in the whole village sat at the end of Main Street on top of a hill. Jamie could see the fine home from his front porch. He sat in the old rocking chair and stared at the front of the grand house.

Someday, I will have a fine home like that, thought Jamie.

Jamie was just a small squirrel, but he worked very hard. Everyone in town said that Jamie was a hard worker. If you ever needed help with anything, you could always count on Jamie to lend a hand.

Jamie never told anyone that he wanted a beautiful big house like the one on the hill. It was his dream, but he didn't think it would do to tell others about it. He just kept his dream to himself.

One day, a big storm came through the area and did a lot of damage. Many homes in the little town were broken or washed away. Jamie's little home was nowhere to be found. Several of his neighbors' homes were only damaged a little, so they offered to let Jamie stay with them just until he could find a new home.

Jamie spent every day helping all of the squirrels in the little town repair their homes. Some of the houses only needed a little work, but some needed lots of work. Jamie worked from sunrise to sunset every day. When his work was done for the day, he would go back to his neighbor's little home and sleep in a small back room.

Everyone in the village knew that Jamie was helping everyone else and not taking time to build his own new home. Several of the town's squirrels got together to discuss the matter.

"We need to find a home for Jamie," said the mayor. "Jamie has done so much for all of us. He hasn't even taken time to rebuild his own home."

"Yes, I agree," said Mrs. Wilson. "I think Jamie deserves the best home we can find."
