Jean Craighead George: The Wonders of Nature

What is a naturalist? A naturalist is a person. This person studies animal life. He or she studies plant life. He or she loves nature.


Jean Craighead George is a naturalist. She has been a naturalist since the day she was born. She was born on July 2, 1919. She was born in Washington, D.C. Most of her family are students of nature. Growing up, they went camping. They climbed trees to study owls. They made fish hooks from twigs. A turkey vulture was Jean's first pet.


Jean shares her passion for nature in her books. She began writing in third grade. She wrote poems. She wrote short stories. Jean did not believe that she could ever be a writer. In 1940, Jean graduated from Penn State University. She has a degree in science and in English.
