Jefferson Davis

When the states in the South seceded, they needed their own president. Jefferson Davis would become the only president that the Confederate States of America would have.


Davis was born in Kentucky in 1808. He went to many different schools and was well educated. He graduated from West Point. After graduating, he served in the Army. In 1835, he resigned. He married, but his wife died three months later of malaria. For the next few years, he rarely left the plantation that he owned.


In 1845, he married again. His wife was from an important family. He began to leave his farm more and became interested in politics. He was elected to Congress. He resigned his seat in 1846 when the Mexican-American War broke out.
