Lichens

Have you ever seen a rock that has dry, lacy, gray-green things growing on it? Those dry things are lichens. They are not plants! Plants have roots. Plants have leaves. Lichens do not have roots OR leaves. Lichens grow on rocks and trees. Some look like hair. Some are flat and crusty looking.

Lichens are really two things growing together. They are partners. They need each other to live. The gray, brown, or yellow parts you see are a fungus. Mushrooms are a fungus, too.
