Laura awoke almost as soon as the sun came climbing out of the ocean horizon. Her day was too full of plans to waste time in bed. Mom felt the same excitement. She looked forward to a day of shopping in some of the whimsical shops along the boardwalk. Dad planned to lounge in the cool water and let the waves massage his tired muscles. Luis had a harder time getting the day started, until he remembered where he was. Then it didn't take him long to catch up. He sat at the breakfast table with his flippers on and his snorkel mask in hand.
"I'm glad to see everyone is so interested in breakfast," said Mom as she placed a platter of pancakes onto the table. "At home I would have to nag and nag to get everyone to sit down together."
"Well, Mom, everything seems better at the beach. Even Luis is not as annoying here as he is at home," said Laura with a grin.
Luis made a face at Laura, but he was having too much fun to feel very insulted by Laura's remark.
"I found some really neat stuff in the water yesterday while I was snorkeling," said Luis. "I am really looking forward to what I will find today."
"What did you find?" asked Dad as he put down the newspaper and helped himself to the pancakes.
"I found some really colorful shells, two quarters, and an old rusty key. It is one of those old-fashioned, long keys." Luis looked at his dad. "Do you think it might be an antique? Maybe it opens a treasure chest that is buried somewhere in the sand!" Luis rubbed his hands together in anticipation.
"I doubt that it is a key to a treasure chest, but since you mentioned the quarters, that reminded me that I lost some change yesterday down by the shore," smiled Laura.
