Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

A famous battle happened in 1876. It happened near the Little Bighorn River in Montana. Native Americans and white settlers both wanted this land. The Native Americans had lived there for hundreds of years. They lived freely on the land. They moved to follow the buffalo. Settlers were eager to claim these lands for their own, especially after gold was found in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Many settlers moved west in search of gold. This caused more fights with the Native Americans over land.


The battle began when Lieutenant Colonel George Custer took his men to scout the area. They were supposed to wait for more soldiers to arrive before they attacked. Custer did not wait.
