A luge athlete is called a "slider." Once sliders get started down the track, they lie with their backs on the sled and their feet out in front of them. Luge is a dangerous sport. Their heads are only centimeters from the ice. They have been known to reach speeds of nearly 90 miles per hour.

Big feet are not good for sliders. They must look over their feet to see where they are going. The bigger their feet, the harder it is to see the track ahead of them. Sliders steer the sled with the weight of their bodies. The luge sled is flat. There are two metal blades on the bottom of the sled. These blades, called runners, touch the ice. The blades help the sled to go faster. Imagine putting ice skating blades on the bottom of your sled. Wouldn't you go much faster?
