May I Borrow Your Pen?

May I Borrow Your Pen?

Reading Comprehension for October 30

The teacher said to write a story. Jane said, "May we use a pen?" The teacher said to use a pencil first. Then she could use a pen for the final copy.

Pens have been around for a long time. The first pens were called quill pens. A quill is a long feather. The end was dipped in ink. Then it was used to write. It was sometimes messy. Next was the fountain pen. It had to be filled with ink. It was hard to fill. It had a pointy tip. It was messy, too.

John Loud invented a pen. It had a roller-ball tip. It had a place that held ink. It was used to write on leather. On October 30, 1888, he got a patent for his idea. A patent is like a license. He had invented the first ball-point pen.
