Martha Stewart is a famous woman. She is seen on TV. She has a radio show. She has her own magazine. She has a catalog of products. She is even online. It seems that everywhere we go, Martha is there, too.


Martha Stewart was born on August 3, 1941. She was born in New Jersey. There are six children in her family. Martha is number two. Growing up, the children had chores to do. Many children do not like chores. Martha liked doing hers. Her mother taught her how to cook. Her mother made all of the children's clothes. She taught Martha how to sew. Martha's father liked to garden. She helped him plant flowers. She helped plant fruit trees and bushes. The family ate vegetables from the garden. Martha learned how to can and preserve what they grew. These chores would be important later in her life.


Martha's parents worked very hard. They expected their children to do the same. Martha was a very good student. She loved to read. She wrote for the school newspaper. She was a member of the art club. During high school, Martha wanted to be a model. She went to New York. Her picture was in magazines. She did a few TV commercials. Martha graduated from high school. She was one of the top ten students in her class.
