New Amsterdam

New York City got its start in 1624. It was first settled by the Dutch. A trading post was first built there for colonists of the Dutch West India Company on the island of Manhattan. Thirty families settled there. A fort was built to protect the little colony. Other Dutch colonies stretched along the Hudson River to where Albany is today. In 1626, Peter Minuit, the Dutch governor, bought the island of Manhattan from the Indians. He named the town New Amsterdam. Later governor Peter Stuyvesant helped the colony grow. By 1650, .....
