New Name Fun

Get a Different Name Day

Reading Comprehension for February 13

Ann's friends were bored. It was a cold, gray day in contrast to the bright yellow, orange, and red leaves on the trees outside. They had played soccer at the playground. Ann invited them home for hot cocoa. It was the best cold weather treat! Their mugs were empty now. What should they do next?

The group trooped into the living room and sprawled on the floor. Ann turned on the TV. A loud cartoon came on. Her wide grin showed a gap in her teeth.

"Ann! Turn that off!"

Ann's mother came into the room. "I just put the baby down for a nap. Your friends can stay if they will be quiet. Just don't wake the baby." She turned and went back down the hall.

Ann turned off the TV and frowned. "Don't wake the baby," she mimicked. "That's all I ever hear anymore!"

Catherine, Sarah, and Taylor thought Ann's baby sister was cute. They said so! The boys shook their heads. They understood how Ann felt.

"Mom never lets me play in the house anymore," Mike said. He wrinkled his freckled nose. "Sometimes I think I should move to Grandma's house."

Nick nodded. His dark eyes narrowed to slits. "My aunt has a baby boy. The grown-ups make such a fuss. You'd think they never saw a baby before!"

Denver was wandering around the room. He bent over a book on the floor. His blond hair flopped over his eyes. "Hey, what's this?" he asked.

Ann rolled her eyes. It was her mother's baby name book. That's where she had found the baby's name. "That book says that Elva's name means elfin and good. She's the size of an elf, but I don't think she's all that good." Ann sighed. "It's not fair! She gets all the attention, and she has a more interesting name than I do!"

"I know what we can do!" Taylor said suddenly. Her blue eyes snapped with excitement. "Let's find different names for ourselves. We can use that book!" Her brown pigtails fell over her shoulders as she retrieved the book from the floor.

Catherine liked that idea. "My name is too long. I want something short and sweet."

Sarah tugged on her own dark braids. "I suppose that could be fun. Do we pick names for each other? Or do we just choose our own new names?"
