Freedom From Fear of Speaking Day

Reading Comprehension for July 2

Are you afraid to speak to a group? Do your hands sweat and shake whenever you have to get up to do an oral report? You are not alone. But, you can overcome your fear and begin to enjoy speaking in public. Once you understand your fear and develop a strategy, you will be on your way to calm presentations. Don't believe it? Then read on.

The first step to overcoming your fear is to understand why you are afraid. Most people don't speak in front of groups regularly. This is probably one of the main reasons for fear of public speaking. "Practice makes perfect" is a good motto to use in this situation. Look for opportunities to practice speaking in public. It will help you to be more comfortable when you have an oral presentation to give.

Another reason you may be anxious is a lack of confidence in your ability to present a certain subject. Here, preparation will help you. Be sure to know your subject well. If possible, choose a subject that is familiar to you. If this is not possible, then spend some time doing the legwork on your topic. When you are comfortable with your information, it will make it much easier for you to present the topic.
