Permanent Human Colony

Tim walked down the long corridor with his book bag over his shoulder. Classes today seemed like they would never end. Tim made his way into the large observation room and sat in one of the overstuffed chairs. The massive floodlights were on outside the glass sphere, and Tim could see the men working in their scuba equipment.

The men were collecting samples and making notes about the aquatic life that lived around the PHC structure. PHC stood for Permanent Human Colony, and Tim and his family had lived here for several months now. Tim loved watching the men work in the warm ocean waters. Their work was vital to understanding and developing new research in various areas of oceanography.

As Tim watched the underwater tasks, his personal communicator chimed, and his mother's voice came across the device. "Tim, I need you to come back to our quarters now and get ready for supper."

"Okay, Mom," said Tim as he touched the small communicator on his arm. He didn't even realize he had been in the observation room for so long.

Tim put down his book bag as he walked into the kitchen. "Mom, when do you think my cousin Jason and his family will get to come visit us? I talked to him on the subspace communication system last night, and he said they would really like to come see us."

"I am anxious for them to come, too. They have to wait until there is a transport coming back to Earth from the moon. Ever since they moved to the lunar colony, it has changed the frequency of get-togethers," Mom said as she put the last dish for supper in the cooking unit. "Now wash your hands and set the table for me, please."

Tim reluctantly went to the bathroom to wash his hands, and when he came back into the kitchen, his father was sitting down at the table. "Hi, Dad," said Tim. "I watched you and some of the other men working while I was in the observation room this afternoon. Has the new migration of fish started yet?"

"We think we will see that next week, buddy. How was school today?" asked Dad as he patted Tim on the shoulder.

"Okay, I guess. I just get so bored sometimes. I wish I could help you on the outside sometime. You know I have been doing really well in scuba class. My teacher says I am a natural," Tim said with pride.
