Project Mercury

Space travel has become fairly common. Many men and women around the world have been into space.

Until 1961, no one had been to space. People could look up at the sky and only imagine. What was it like up there? What could be seen? Airplanes had gone faster and higher, but none had reached space. People began to wonder if it were possible to put a man into space.

The United States government created Project Mercury. The project's goal was to put a man in space. From 1959 through 1963, the project put six men into space. It took a lot of work, a lot of money, and a lot of experiments.
