Pterosaurs

All animals that lived during the time of dinosaurs weren't dinosaurs. Dinosaurs walked on land. There were winged animals flying in the sky. They weren't birds. They weren't dinosaurs that could fly. They were flying reptiles called pterosaurs (TAIR-oh-SORES).

Pterosaur means "winged lizard." Just like with dinosaurs, there were many different kinds of pterosaurs, too. Some were as small as a sparrow. Some had wings as large as an airplane! Many pterosaurs had teeth, unlike birds. Some of them had long tails.

One of these was named Rhamphorhynchus (RAM-for-ING-kus). It was about a foot and a half long. It had a short neck and a long tail. It had sharp teeth for eating fish. It probably flew over the water and grabbed fish at the surface.
