River Rats

Cole was worried. It was only two more days until graduation, and he still didn't have a job. He wanted to work for a couple of years before he went to college. He couldn't do that without a job, though.

The biggest problem was that Cole didn't know what kind of job he wanted. He went to see the school counselor. The counselor gave him a test. The test was about the kinds of things Cole liked to do. When he had answered all the questions, the counselor looked at the test.

"Cole, you enjoy doing a lot of things. You like to work with people, so you might make a good server or receptionist. You like to show people how to do things, too. That might mean you would be a good teacher or aide. You like to take care of people. Doctors and nurses take care of people. You like excitement and moving fast. Being a bus driver wouldn't be a good job for you!"

Cole talked to the counselor for about an hour. They still didn't find out what job would be best for Cole. Cole was even more worried than he had been before.

Cole walked slowly toward home after school. Tim walked up beside him.

"Hi, Cole!" Tim said. "What's up?"

"Oh, nothing much," Cole answered. "I'm just worried about finding a job. I can't even decide what kind of job I would like! Mr. James said I have all kinds of talents, but he didn't know what kind of job I needed, either."

Tim thought and thought while he walked along with Cole. All of a sudden he had an idea.

"Hey! I know what you can be," he said. "You can be a river rat!"
