What is under the ocean? For many years, people didn't really know. People can't breathe under the water. We can only hold our breath for a few minutes. Swimmers couldn't go very deep. They needed to come back to the surface to breathe.


Early diving equipment was invented to let people breathe under the water. It had a heavy metal helmet. There were tubes connecting the helmet to a boat on the water above. Air was pumped through the tubes so the diver could breathe. The helmet was joined to a heavy suit. The suit helped divers go deeper into the water. With this equipment, divers could stay under the water for longer times. They could not move very well, though. The equipment was too heavy. The air tubes meant the diver must stay close to the boat above.
