Shavu'ot in Israel

Shavu'ot in Israel

Reading Comprehension for June 9

Do you like to receive gifts? Who doesn't, right? Think about a gift you received once - maybe for a birthday or another holiday. How did it make you feel to get a nice gift? Maybe you were happy or excited. Were you thankful for the gift? Now think about a time when you gave someone a gift. Did it feel the same as receiving a gift? Some people like to give gifts more than they like receiving gifts. Do you think this is strange?

In the Jewish religion - called Judaism - there is a holiday that is all about gifts. The holiday is called Shavu'ot, and it represents all kinds of gifts. On Shavu'ot, Jews in Israel and all over the world remember the gifts their God has given them. These gifts are everything from food to a very important book.

Shavu'ot happens on a different calendar day every year. Shavu'ot begins seven weeks after the end of the Jewish holiday of Passover. Because of this, Shavu'ot is sometimes called the "Festival of Weeks."
