The Everglades

Southern Florida is home to the Everglades. The Everglades have been home to the Seminole Indians for centuries. Many Seminoles still live in the Everglades today.

Some people think that all the Everglades is swamp. But the water in the Everglades is really a river. Some people call it a slow-moving flood. The water comes from Lake Okeechobee south of Orlando. As the water enters the Everglades, the river grows. It grows to be 60 miles wide and more than 100 miles long.

More than 300 varieties of birds and 300 kinds of fish can be found in the Everglades. There are also 750 types of plants.
