Hundreds of years ago, mapmaking was a very different job than it is today. Then, explorers drew maps by hand. Their perspective of the land made mapmaking difficult. Drawing a map of a large area is hard when you can only see a few miles at one time! As a result, their maps were often quite inaccurate. Today, everything has changed. Maps are drawn by computers.
