The Last Monday in May

Memorial Day is celebrated in May. It is a day to honor those who have died serving our country. Many times flowers or wreaths are placed at their graves. Memorial Day is celebrated on the last Monday of May. Many businesses and government offices are closed. It was not always celebrated in this way.


General John A. Logan started the tradition. He was the commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1866, he spoke at an event in a cemetery in Illinois. Many experts believe this is where he got the idea. He took this idea to Waterloo, New York. On May 5, 1868, the town honored the dead by decorating the graves of soldiers.
