The Legend of the Popcorn Ball

Popcorn Popping Day

Reading Comprehension for December 23

Steven and Amber waited for the last of the popcorn to finish popping. Slowly, the pops began to get further apart. Grandma carefully moved the pan back and forth over the hot fire. Finally, the pops had nearly stopped. Grandma turned the stove off, pulled the lid off the pan, and poured the popped corn into a large bowl, filling it to overflowing.

"M-m-m, that smells so good," said Steven, sniffing the air near the bowl. "Do we get to eat some while we string it for the Christmas tree?"

"Oh, please, Grandma," Amber pleaded.

"Yes, of course. I'll put some in smaller bowls for you. You can munch on it while you string the kernels together," Grandma replied, reaching for the bowls in the cupboard.

"I love popcorn," said Amber, smacking her lips. "It's a good snack, right, Grandma?"

"It sure is," she responded. "Popcorn is low in calories, low in fat, and provides your body with energy from the starch it contains."

"Steven doesn't need too much energy," Amber teased her older brother. "He's already got enough."

"So do you!" Steven teased back.
