The Red Snap Dragon, Part 3

Light was just beginning to stain the horizon when she woke. Snap was whimpering and looking into the girl's face, demanding her breakfast.

Elise fumbled with the fastener on her bag and pulled out the wrapped meat she had stashed there. She could hardly get the pieces out without Snap's mouth nibbling at her fingers.

"Hold on," she said, and finally freed up enough to give the animal a decent meal.

Elise could see the curl of smoke rising from a group of trees a little distance away. She wished she could go and beg for some supplies, but she could not leave Snap. Having Snap with her was a guarantee of being remembered. It was better to avoid every home and attempt to find Mara's hill farm by herself.

Tom Baker walked slowly up the long road that led to the hill farm. He already rued having listened to Arran Sawyer. Nothing good ever came from that man. Now Tom's own daughter was missing. All on account of that dragon!

Now he had to go and explain what had happened to Mara and Montrose. He suspected they wouldn't be very sympathetic.

"You did what?" fumed Mara.

She started to rise from where she sat at the table. Montrose put a hand on her shoulder and pushed her back down.

"What's important now is that we help you find your daughter and Snap. What color is the dragon?" asked Montrose.

"It's red with gold. Quite a pretty little thing, actually," said Tom, trying to get back into Mara's good graces.

"I'm calling Warbret," said Mara. "He can search faster than we can."
