What Is a Headache?

Headache Awareness Week

Reading Comprehension for June 6

Your head is pounding. It's hard to think. You have a headache. Almost everyone suffers from one sometime in his or her life. But, what causes headaches? What kind of headaches do people have? How can the pain be relieved? When should a doctor be called?

Headaches are a common problem. They occur when the nerve endings in your head are stimulated. This can be because of tension in the muscles of your head or neck. It can be because the blood vessels in your head are dilated. Nerve endings in the membrane surrounding your brain also sense pain. The brain itself does not feel pain so the pain is coming from the surrounding areas. There are two basic kinds of headaches - primary and secondary.

A primary headache occurs on its own. No medical condition is causing the pain. These types of headaches fall into three categories - migraines, cluster headaches, and tension headaches.
