What on Earth Is an Earthworm?

If you were to step outside after a rainy morning you may see several things. You would probably see some big puddles. These are good for jumping in. You may see some mud. This can be good for making mud pies. You may also see some earthworms. What on earth is an earthworm? What are they good for?

Earthworms are invertebrates. They do not have backbones. They have long thin bodies and two pointed ends. Earthworms are also annelids. Annelids are animals with soft and long bodies. These bodies are made up of several segments that are shaped like rings.

Earthworms have a lot of heart. They actually have five of them! Each heart is responsible for pumping blood to a different part of the worm's body. They do not, however, have any eyes. To see, these worms use eye spots to sense light. These worms eat plants and vegetables that are rotting. They also eat animal remains.
