Who Cares? Chapter 1

Eric picked up his math book. He put it in his book bag. He had a lot of homework. He used to like doing math homework. Lately, though, he didn't like it as much. Nobody cared, anyway. Nobody cared if he made good grades or not. His father wasn't around. His mother had to work all the time. He almost never saw her. When she was at home, she was always too tired to talk to him.

Eric had a lot of things on his mind. He just kept thinking and thinking about his life. He couldn't seem to stop thinking about it. He didn't sleep much, either. He felt down all the time. He had a hard time getting up in the morning. It didn't matter, anyway. Nobody was at home when he got up. Nobody cared if he got up or not.

Eric started out of the room.

"Eric!" Mr. Davis called.

Eric turned and looked at Mr. Davis.

"Eric, you seem a little down lately. Is everything okay?"

"Yeah, fine. I'm just fine," Eric said. He was very sure Mr. Davis was just being nice. Mr. Davis really didn't want to hear about his problems.

Mr. Davis looked confused. "Well, if you ever . . . if you want to . . . well, have a great weekend, then."

Eric nodded and walked on down the hall. "Why do people ask you how you are?" he asked himself. "They just want to hear that you're fine. No one has time to listen," he thought.
