Why Some Immigrants Went Home

Most people think that the immigrants came to America, worked hard, and lived happily ever after. But some immigrants did not have much luck in the New World. They decided to go home for different reasons.

One woman named Ethel Suchman came to New York City as a teenager. She lived with relatives, but she missed her family. She missed her old way of life. After a year, she went back to Austria. However, she must have had some fun in America. Maybe she liked the monkeys that the organ grinders had with them. Maybe she liked hot dogs and pizza. She discovered that she still was not completely happy in Austria. Years later, she came back to America for good.

Some immigrants never planned to stay. Their goal was to come to America, earn as much money as they could, and then go back to their villages. Their small savings from their time in America made them rich and well-respected in their hometowns. Immigrants who came in the spring for jobs and went home during the winter when the work was done were called "seasonal workers."
