Bookworms hunger for reading material. (Pardon the pun.) PIE can help the reader gain a better understanding of the material. PIE stands for persuade, inform/instruct, and entertain. Writers have a purpose for writing, and that purpose is often one of those three types. A writer may want to persuade readers to agree with her or to act on something that matters to her. An example of persuasion is a political ad. A writer may simply have news to share with readers; newspapers are filled with articles to inform the readers of current events.
