Writing a Check

"Okay," Kate said, "now we're onto lesson two." She was showing Josh how to use his new checking account. "You're going to write a check. Did you bring a bill with you?"

"Yes," Josh told her, "I brought my electric bill."

"Great, let's write a check to pay it," Kate said. "Turn to the first check in your starter kit. Write today's date in the upper right-hand corner."

Josh wrote the month, day, and year on the line where it said "date."

The next line said "pay to the order of."

Kate told Josh that meant the name of the person or company he was writing the check to. Josh wrote "City Electric" on the line.

Next to that line was a box with a dollar sign in front of it. "That is where you write the amount of the check in numbers. There are two places where you write the amount. We'll get to the other one in a second," Kate told Josh.

Josh wrote 44.10 in the box. "Now what do I do?" he asked.

"Now you have to write the number in words right here." Kate pointed to the long line in the middle of the check. At the end of that line, it said "dollars." "Start at the very beginning of the line. Write just the whole dollar amount in words."
