Your Muscular System

Your muscular system helps you move your body. But you have some muscles you may not know about. Did you just blink your eyes? Your muscles did that. Did you just take a breath? Muscles helped you do that, too. Your stomach is a muscle that helps you digest food. Your heart is a muscle that pumps your blood through your body.

You have about 640 muscles in your body. Some you can control. Some you can't. But that is a good thing. The muscles you can control you have to think about. If you want to take a walk, you have to think about moving your feet. Your feet and legs don't just start walking until your brain sends them a signal.

Muscles that move your body are called skeletal muscles. That's because those muscles are joined to your skeleton (your bones). Your bones and muscles work together. Skeletal muscles pull on bones to make them move. Together, they make your arms, hands, legs, and feet move.
