¹     Houses can be built from strong wood. They can be made of sturdy bricks. One type of house is made from softer material. You can even eat it! It's a gingerbread house.
 
²     Long ago, monks made this tasty bread. They made it for holidays. They made it to honor their saints. Monks mixed moist dough. They had a special wooden board. The board had patterns on it. The monks pushed the soft dough into the board. Presto! The cookie had a nice design on it. The pattern stayed when the cookie was baked.
 
³     Settlers from Europe brought recipes to America. People loved this spicy treat. They made cookies. They also made gingerbread houses. They decorated the cookies. They decorated the houses. They had fun!
