1 John Tyler was the tenth president. He was the first person to become president without being elected. This happened because the ninth president died. William H. Harrison died after one month in office. John Tyler was his vice president. The Constitution explains how the new president is chosen. It said that the vice president becomes president if the president can no longer do his job. Some people did not like this rule. They gave Tyler a nickname. It was "His Accidency."
