What Is a Heart Attack?

1     You probably know at least one person who has had a heart attack. Heart disease is common. Heart attacks are the number one cause of death in the United States. You may know people who have had a heart attack, but do you know what a heart attack is? To understand, you have to start where it all begins-in the blood.
 
2     Blood carries many things through the body. It carries oxygen. It carries nutrients. It carries waste. It also carries tiny pieces of fat and cholesterol. Some of these are made inside the body. Others come from the foods that we eat.
