What Is an Allergist? By Jennifer Kenny Rewritten as a short reader by Cindy Grigg

---

¹     An allergist is a doctor who is trained to manage and treat allergies. He or she also manages immune system problems. An allergist might treat people who have animal allergies, food allergies, and allergies to medicine. He or she might treat those with asthma, hay fever, or hives.
 
²     Allergists work with people of all ages. They work with girls and boys. They work with men and women. They work with patients who suffer from asthma, allergies, or both.
 
³     Allergists need to get a four year college degree in premed education. Then they go on to medical school. They also work in hospitals and clinics while in school. When they are finished with medical school, they work for three more years in the field of internal medicine or pediatrics to become an allergist. Next, they complete two years of study called a fellowship in an allergy/immunology program. Finally, they need to pass an exam to become board certified.
