School Lunches
By Jennifer Kenny

1     On a typical school day, children eat lunch in the school cafeteria. Some children bring their lunches from home; others choose their lunches from a menu offered at school. Children and parents often have a strong opinion on which is better. The reality is that one is not necessarily better than the other. Both can vary on their taste and nutrition.

2     Throughout the day students are very busy participating in various activities. Lunch becomes an important part of eating healthy. It provides the student with energy. It helps the child to grow. It also helps the body not to get sick.

3     Some children or their parents feel that a lunch brought from home is the better choice. If that is the case, there are important things to consider. If the lunch is filled with a fruit drink, cookies, high fat deli meat, and white bread, that's not necessarily a healthier lunch. Instead, if the lunch contains whole grain bread, lower fat deli meat, fresh fruit, and water, that could be considered a healthy lunch.
