The "Lone Star" Is Not Lonely

1     It is the 28th state. It is east of New Mexico. It is north of Mexico. President George W. Bush was its governor. It is called the "Lone Star State." What state is it? It is Texas.
 
2     On December 29, 1845, Texas became a state. Indians were moved from the state. Railroads were built. Most people lived on farms. They raised cattle. They grew cotton. Texas grew quickly.
 
3     Texas comes from the word "teysha." It is an Indian word. It means "hello friend." Explorers used the word. They used it to describe how friendly the Texas people were. Today, the Texas state motto is "friendship."
